I was hoping for some good news about the next steps for Perch by now. But, nothing has been reported since Drew's forum post so I'm as much in the dark as you. Perhaps Perch will go open source? Perhaps it will be sold? Your guess is as good as mine!
Anyway, in this newsletter there is an exciting new image add-on that enables focal point selection with Perch images. And some great examples of sites built with Perch Shop. Nice work by everyone.
